The standard is an international buffet with a live BBQ station: a mix of Arabic, Asian, and Continental dishes, salads, breads, desserts, and unlimited soft drinks, tea, and coffee. Here is a realistic walkthrough of the spread, including what vegetarians and picky eaters can expect.

The live BBQ station

The centrepiece of most dhow cruise buffets is the live grill, where chicken tikka, kebabs, and grilled chicken are cooked to order in front of you. This is usually the most popular counter on the boat, and the skewers go straight from the grill to your plate. If you like your food hot and fresh, start here before the queues build.

Arabic dishes

Expect the familiar staples of a Middle Eastern buffet: hummus, moutabbal, fattoush and tabbouleh salads, stuffed vine leaves, falafel, and warm Arabic bread. Drinks: what is included
